Gujarat Police Launches ‘NARIT AI’: A Smart Tool to Fight Drug Crime with Artificial Intelligence

In a major step toward modernizing law enforcement, Gujarat Police has introduced an advanced AI-powered system aimed at strengthening investigations into drug-related crimes.

Named NARIT AI (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool), this innovative platform is designed to assist officers in handling complex narcotics cases more efficiently and accurately.

What is NARIT AI?

NARIT AI is built on Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, which combines data retrieval with AI-generated insights.

In simple terms, the system:

Pulls information from verified legal and case databases

Analyzes it in real time

Provides actionable insights to investigating officers

It integrates:

Legal provisions under the NDPS Act

Past case laws

Investigation procedures

Government guidelines

👉 This ensures that officers get accurate, context-aware guidance while working on cases.

Developed Through Collaboration

The tool was developed by the Western Railway Police, Vadodara Division, in collaboration with a Mumbai-based AI startup.

The initiative was guided by:

Harsh Sanghavi (Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat)

KLN Rao (DGP of Gujarat)

Anupam Singh Gehlot (Surat Police Commissioner)

The project was initiated by Abhay Soni, Superintendent of Police (SP), Western Railway, Vadodara.

Why This Tool Matters

Drug-related cases in India often face a major challenge—procedural errors.

Even when evidence is strong, minor lapses in following proper legal procedures can lead to acquittals.

👉 NARIT AI aims to solve this problem by:

Ensuring procedural compliance

Reducing human errors

Providing step-by-step investigative guidance

Key Benefits of NARIT AI

1. Real-Time Analytical Support

Officers can receive instant insights while handling cases, helping them make informed decisions quickly.

2. Improved Conviction Rates

By minimizing procedural gaps, the tool is expected to increase the success rate of prosecutions under narcotics laws.

3. Reduced Workload

Earlier, only specialized officers handled complex NDPS cases. Now, even junior officers can manage investigations effectively.

4. Minimal AI Hallucination

Since the system is trained on:

High Court and Supreme Court judgments

Bare Acts

Verified government data

👉 The chances of incorrect or misleading outputs are significantly reduced.

A “Force Multiplier” for Police

According to SP Abhay Soni, NARIT AI will act as a force multiplier.

It enables:

Faster case handling

Better documentation

Standardized investigation procedures

👉 This means more efficiency and consistency across the police force.

Government’s Zero-Tolerance Approach

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi emphasized that the state follows a “zero tolerance” policy toward narcotics crimes.

The use of AI tools like NARIT AI reflects the government’s commitment to:

Leveraging technology

Strengthening enforcement

Ensuring justice

Easy to Use and Scalable

One of the biggest advantages of NARIT AI is its accessibility.

Can be used by officers of any rank

Simple interface for quick adoption

Scalable across different regions

👉 This ensures that the technology can be widely implemented without major training barriers.

Final Thoughts

The launch of NARIT AI marks a significant milestone in the use of artificial intelligence in policing.

By combining legal knowledge with advanced AI capabilities, Gujarat Police is setting a new benchmark for law enforcement in India.

👉 As technology continues to evolve, tools like NARIT AI could play a crucial role in making investigations more efficient, accurate, and fair.
